Hadith 32 of 42

Title

No harm

Arabic

لَا ضَرَرَ وَلَا ضِرَارَ.

Translation

There shall be no harm, nor the causing of harm in return.

Narrator

ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās & ʿUbādah ibn aṣ-Ṣāmit

Commentary

Five words that ground entire chapters of Islamic law — environment, property, nuisance, contracts. You may not harm another; you may not retaliate with equal harm when a lesser remedy exists.
