Hadith 31 of 42

Title

Zuhd in this world

Arabic

ازْهَدْ فِي الدُّنْيَا يُحِبَّكَ اللَّهُ، وَازْهَدْ فِيمَا عِنْدَ النَّاسِ يُحِبَّكَ النَّاسُ.

Translation

Be detached from the world and Allah will love you; be detached from what people have and people will love you.

Commentary

Zuhd is not hating the dunyā — it is letting it pass through the hand without sticking to the heart. You can own a fortune and be zāhid; you can own nothing and be consumed by envy.
