Hadith 41 of 42

Title

Conforming desires to the revelation

Arabic

لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يَكُونَ هَوَاهُ تَبَعًا لِمَا جِئْتُ بِهِ.

Translation

None of you truly believes until his desires follow what I have brought.

Narrator

Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr

Source

disputed chain — cited in Nawawī's 40

Commentary

The chain of this hadith is weak, but scholars include it because its meaning is rooted across the Qur'an — 'so judge between them by what Allah revealed, and do not follow their desires.' Īmān is the willingness to set down what you want when it conflicts with what Allah has said.
