Hadith 38 of 42

Title

The allies of Allah

Translation

Whoever shows enmity to a walī (close servant) of Mine, I have declared war on him. My servant draws near to Me with nothing more beloved than what I have obligated on him. My servant keeps drawing near Me with voluntary deeds until I love him — and when I love him, I am the hearing with which he hears, the sight with which he sees, the hand with which he strikes, and the foot with which he walks. If he asks of Me, I will give him; if he seeks refuge in Me, I will grant it.

Commentary

The ladder: first the obligatory, then the voluntary, then the love of Allah, then the perceptible help in his senses and limbs. The path begins with the farāʾiḍ — a believer who abandons them cannot climb higher on the nawāfil.
