About this glossary

What is this glossary for?+
A quick, searchable reference for the Arabic terms that show up across the site and in any Islamic book. Every entry is short — Arabic, transliteration, a one-sentence definition, and a concrete example — so you can look up a word and move on.
Is this a substitute for a scholar?+
No. The glossary is an on-ramp — definitions, not rulings. For specific cases (e.g. 'does this specific transaction count as ribā?'), ask a qualified scholar or your local imām. We link to relevant tools on the site where a term has a hands-on calculator.
How are the entries sourced?+
Definitions are drawn from classical usage in the four Sunni madhāhib, as laid out in standard reference works (Fiqh al-Sunnah, al-Mughnī, Reliance of the Traveller, al-Mawsūʿah al-Fiqhiyyah). Where the schools disagree in substance, the entry notes the difference briefly.
A term I want isn't here — can you add it?+
The glossary is growing. We prioritise terms that appear in the site's tools (e.g. qaṣr, jamʿ, tartīb, ʿaṣabah) and terms with real search volume (e.g. wuḍūʾ, qadar, fard vs wājib). If an entry would help you, there is contact info on the footer.
